Mary Sinclair holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Special Education, a Masters in Education from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
Dr. Sinclair is a researcher in the field of education. She was a principal investigator with a research team focused on student engagement and dropout prevention for youth with disabilities at the University of Minnesota, before relocating back to Kansas. Dr. Sinclair teaches graduate courses as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Kansas and more recently at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Mary is married to Dr. Douglas Huffman, a Professor of Science Education at the University of Kansas, who teaches in the elementary teacher licensure program. They have two children – Sam Huffman who graduated from SMEast in 2015 and Ally who is a rising senior. Both attended Highlands and IHMS. Mary’s niece and nephews are SMSD students and alumni in the SMEast area. She and her four siblings are all alumni of SMSD – go Thunderbirds and SMEast Class of 1981!
Mary has been an active member of the PTA since her children started school in 2002. She has served continuously as a PTA legislative chair at Highlands, Indian Hills, East, as well at the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA and Kansas PTA. She was elected to a term as Highlands PTA President and Kansas PTA Legislative Chair. Mary will be the first to say that mentoring through the district’s MVP program for the past six year and those earlier years as room-parent have been far more rewarding than most time spent advocating in Topeka.
Other related experiences include: citizen member of the Fairway Parks and Recreation committee since before the recession, education member of the ad hoc Johnson County Public Square committee, board chair and board member of two family businesses.
